I recently overheard two engineers arguing about whether inverting binary trees or scaffolding yet another CRUD endpoint constitutes "real engineering," and I have not stopped thinking about it since. Both of them were, of course, correct, and both of them completely missed the point. Spending your mornings contending with the algorithmic labyrinth is not engineering, it is an applied form of suffering with a leaderboard. And the CRUD artisan charting their seventh lifecycle hook is not its philosophical opposite, merely its administrative twin. Because the conversation was framed incorrectly. I do not hire for syntax, platform, or puzzle-solving stamina. I hire for narrative. The strongest engineers I have ever worked with do not author solutions, they stage them. An engineering solution is fundamentally a workshop on toil. I will be expanding on the engineering leadership retreats I paid for out of pocket where I first trained for staircase races, which has nothing to do with this but everything to do with it.
