Last Tuesday I deleted my 6 a.m. calendar block.
You know the one — the mandatory pre-dawn sync where I'd interrogate the team about yesterday's output before their coffee had even cooled.
Honestly, it started because my daughter asked why I stare at my phone like it owes me money. A question. From a nine-year-old. Boardroom-level insight from someone who still believes in the tooth fairy.
So I ran an experiment.
I removed myself. The permission slips. The reply-all gut checks. The forty-minute meetings that got scheduled for eleven minutes of actual decision, three weeks out, with six people who did not need to be there.
My inbox went quiet. Suspiciously quiet. The silence of a man who has just, arguably, become pointless.
Week two: the numbers crept upward: revenue, morale, an unprompted "this is the first time my opinions have existed at work." That last one stopped me cold. I logged out. Didn't refresh. Didn't draft a confessional email to cover my guilt.
The transition didn't come with policy. That's the boring part people skip: shadowing, non-ownership, renegotiation with my own sense of decorative importance. Permission given back softly, then not taken again.
That's not the punchline.
Learning that stepping away from micromanagement isn't abandonment: it's a structural correction your business priced in before you told it to. My control didn't subsidize revenue—it taxed it. Deleting yourself is a genuine good use disorder.

1️⃣ I used to review every single deliverable. Every slide. Every comma. Every synergy. 🧠
2️⃣ Then I read one book, had one shower thought, and unlocked a whole new operating system. 🚿✨
3️⃣ I started saying "I trust you" while quietly tracking everything in a shared doc anyway. Trust, but verify. Verify, but post about the trust. 🔍
4️⃣ Revenue went up. Was it the delegation? The vibes? The fact that I stopped hovering over my team's shoulders like a haunted Roomba? Honestly, not my job to connect those dots. 🌪️
5️⃣ The real lesson? Leadership isn't about control. It's about letting go — visibly, publicly, and with maximum narrative capture. 🕊️
The 3 pillars of NOT micromanaging:
🎯 Pillar One: Let go (but take credit)
🎯 Pillar Two: Empower others (to make you look good)
🎯 Pillar Three: Never attribute outcomes to luck when you can attribute them to your journey
Coincidence? I don't believe in them. I believe in personal brands.

I woke up this morning and realized I hadn’t spoken to my team in six days.
Which, honestly, is my greatest leadership pivot of the year.
We didn’t waste a single status-building consensus loop.
We didn’t sit through someone muting themselves and calling it ideation.
We took our chaotic, glorious stream of “oh also,” “can you check,” and “ping me later” and distilled it into the purest form of cultural choreography ever executed.
Now, our AI doesn’t run meetings—it runs *narratives*.
It asks each human for existential updates and then synthesizes their anxiety into elegantly-worded progress blocks.
It flags “blockers” before the person even knows they feel blocked.
It triages urgency using a sliding scale of exclamation marks we fed it from prod.
I don't manage anymore.
I *interrogate*.
Every Monday I ask the machine “who's lying about being done?” and it delivers receipts sliced from threads I never read.
We call it asynchronous honesty.
Some people say nothing removes empathy.
I say empathy was just another badge of adminship waiting to be automated.
We’re trying sell it back to Slack leadership called SAFE-BY-DEFAULT: Standup Automation For Executive—you know the rest.
The real lesson, framing the change: Human conversation is obsolete once you’ve transcribed enough evidence of all its hesitations.
Embrace the bot, so it can protect the culture you never had time to maintain anyway.
