I hired someone today who is BRUTALLY smarter than I will ever be.
And honestly? It felt like defeat for exactly 4 seconds before it felt like my greatest victory.
š Most leaders hire to feel superior in the room.
š Real leaders hire to make themselves obsolete in the room.
I remember sitting across from them, watching them solve a problem Iād wrestled with for weeksāin the time it took me to sip my oat-milk flat white.
They pivoted my entire strategy mid-interview, and I nearly fired me on the spot.
But hereās the uncomfortable truth no one tells you: your ego is your most expensive overhead.
I didnāt hire for cultural fit.
I hired for cultural DISRUPTION.
I didnāt hire a subordinate.
I hired my successorās successor.
Vulnerability isnāt whispering your fears in a journalāitās signing a six-figure offer to someone who could run circles around your entire C-suite by Tuesday.
My board thinks Iām brave.
My competitors think Iām foolish.
My therapist thinks Iām making progress.
Real leadership means decreasing your own relevance every single day until your legacy is just a footnote under someone more brilliant.
Agree?

Every quarter, my team sat in conference rooms for days wrestling with OKRs. We debated objectives, argued over key results, and fundamentally misunderstood what actually mattered. So we decided to fix it the right way: we trained an AI copilot to generate them for us. I prompted it with our entire annual strategy document and asked it to identify the measurable progress that would actually prove we were moving in the right direction.
The result was perfect. The AI wrote crisp, specific, outcome-based OKRs that aligned every single person on the team. What happened next, however, was the real learning. Nobody noticed. Not one person, including my own leadership, said, "Wow, these Feel different." They just executed them without hesitation.
And I think that's the most important leadership lesson I've ever experienced. When your systems become invisible, that's when they work best. The point of strategy was never to enjoy the process of writing goals on a whiteboard over stale bagels. The point was to execute something coherent almost immediately. My focus went from facilitator to enabler in sixty seconds. And it would have taken me much longer to realize that without the help of an unbranded message composer extension. Growth without pride. That is the priority.
