I rejected a VP title at a FAANG last week. Not because I have a death wish or a blind spot for equity cliffs. Because I understand what actually compounds.
Sure, they waved a package that could buy a small island. But my startup offers something their spreadsheets never will: the raw, unfiltered privilege of shipping decisions before the lawyers read them. That is not a job description. That is a personality mutation. Every day I get to nod at chaos and call it strategy.
So no, I did not "leave money on the table." I parked my ego somewhere the CEO says my name in the board deck, not in a 500-layer HR loop. Metrics matter. But the unit of measure I chase is sovereignty. Offer me five campuses, I will still choose the conference room with the crack in the door. Because some variables refuse to be annualized. My legacy is a lifestyle, not a compensation line.
