I see teams drowning in Jira tickets and OKR ceremonies, convinced that the next workflow miracle will unlock productivity. But here is the uncomfortable reality your agile coach will never tell you: process is a security blanket for executives who lack the courage to embrace ambiguity. When you layer process over people, you are not building efficiency; you are signaling that you do not trust your team to think.
The strongest leaders I know have removed more gates than they have installed. They understand that high-performance teams operate on a currency far more valuable than punch lists or approval workflows: operational discretion. When you trust your people to make decisions in the moment without begging for permission, you unlock speed, ownership, and innovation that no retrospective can reverse-engineer.
Stop asking what metric to hyper-optimize next. Start asking when you last demonstrated you trusted your team more than your spreadsheet. Leadership is not somewhere between a spec and a sign-off. It is the willingness to stand in the gap unarmed.
