My Uber was 40 minutes late to the airport this morning. I tipped him anyway. While I sat there in row 14C, I watched a CFO, a founder, and a "Chief Vibes Officer" all board the same flight and never once make eye contact with each other. That's when it hit me. Most companies don't have a structure. They have a rumor of a structure, warmly defended by seven VPs and a Slack channel nobody reads. It took me 11 years, 4 reorgs, and a divorce to realize this: Your real org chart isn't in the deck. It's in who gets cc'd. It's in who gets 3 seconds of eye contact before the CEO pivots. And it's written in a font your hand-titled direct reports have never even seen. Stop admiring the pyramid. Start counting who actually holds the pen. Your org chart is lying to you.
